Academic Systems Group

Steve Manager

Steve Miley

Steve is the project manager for UCSB's Courseware Management System(CMS) project. Steve provides direction to the technical operations manager of Academic Systems. Steve also manages the Uniprint cost recovery print system used by numerous departments.



Technical Operations Manager

Mark Dotson

Mark supervises the staff (remote facilities coordinator, hardware technician, technical operations coordinator) in the lab services ("Academic Systems Labs Group") division of academic systems. Mark is responsible for all day to day operations of the computer labs.



Remote Facilities Coordinator

Tony Schrick

The Remote Facilities Coordinator is responsible for the remote facilities. He oversees operations in Life Sciences Computing Facility, serving as the on-site staff member for technical and administrative issues with Life Sciences. Tony liaisons between IC and LifeSci lab to meet faculty needs. He instructs consultants who work in the LifeSci lab. Any problems that you may come across concerning the LifeSci lab should be brought to his attention. Tony manages all of the System Operators.



Hardware Technician

Ray Shankland

The Hardware Technician is responsible for daily lab and office preparation and equipment operation. This includes cleaning, maintenance, repair, adjustment, troubleshooting, and problem solving as related to hardware and networks. He makes frequent daily operational and security checks and keeps inventory records of all equipment and purchases operational supplies for all labs. Ray, and Ray's Assistant, are the only ones who are authorized to move any equipment from the labs.



Technical Operations Coordinator

John Echeveste

The Technical Operations Coordinator is responsible for the creation and maintenance for software “packages” and updates throughout all IC operated Computer Labs. This process involvs both Windows OS and the Mac OS X platform. The Technical Operations Coordinator is also responsible for overall quality control for software updates and deployments to our labs and ensure that the quarterly deployment process is completed successfully and that no problems (ie, software conflicts, errors, etc.) exist in the labs.

The Systems Operators (SysOps) perform many functions in the Academic Systems (Labs) Group. Primary duties include lab imaging (Mac/PC), applying security patches, testing software, and fixing daily problems that occur in the labs. SysOps are also assigned special projects including software imaging, programming security analysis, documentation and others. These special projects often depend upon the interest and knowledge of the SysOp. Additionally, they are responsible for physical lab work, setting up workstations, running cable, resolving PC, Mac and printer problems and other general labs related hardware issues.
