Advanced Student Staff Positions

Once you feel you're ready to move on from a consultant position you might check out the various employment positions IC has available. Each of our student staff classifications provide real world experience you can use to prepare you for your post-university career. We have positions spanning many levels of interest and experience: project management, staff supervision, technical support, operating systems, and web programming.

Operations Coordinator
The Operations Coordinators are responsible for everyday lab procedures. They assist in Consultant training and act as liaisons between the office staff and Consultant staff. Operations Coordinators also serve as the authoritative body on software, policy, and projects. Working closely with the Principal Consultant, the Operations Coordinators assist in Consultant scheduling and are responsible for the supervision of approximately eight Consultants. In addition, the Operations Coordinators serve as the main contact point between Instruction Computing and the UCSB faculty. They are responsible for channeling scheduling and software requests from faculty to the Scheduling Coordinator and Software Systems group in order to ensure that courses held in the labs run smoothly. At the beginning of every quarter, Information Presentations are given by Operations Coordinators to inform lab users of Instruction Computing resources. The primary source of contact between lab users and the Operations Coordinator is located in Phelps 1523.
Language Facilitator
Language Facilitators oversee the Kerr Hall Learning Lab facilities, including the Language Lab and the Media Lab. They are responsible for managing the collection of audio-visual materials for various academic departments, including, but not limited to, the foreign language departments. LFs also coordinate with instructors to provide appropriate class software and conduct testing of this software for use in the language lab.
Technical Lab Assistant
The Technical Lab Assistant assists the Hardware Technician in a wide variety of tasks from daily office preparation to setting up workstations, running cable, resolving PC, Mac and printer problems and some general office tasks.
System Operator
SysOps (System Operators) perform many functions in the Systems and Software Group. Primary duties include lab imaging (Mac/PC), applying security patches, preparing disk drives for Extension Classes, testing software, and fixing daily problems that occur in the labs. SysOps will also get special projects including software imaging, programming security analysis, documentation and others. These special projects often depend upon the interest and knowledge of the SysOp.
Application Developer
Strongly technical people with experience coding web applications may apply for one of our application developer positions. The applcation developers code and support custom web systems in support of IC's operations. These projects typically involve homegrown web-database interaction and the use of perl or php. Candidates for these positions should be comfortable coding in either perl or php and have some familiarity with SQL databases.
